Are There Different Types of Dentures?
There are a few types of dentures, depending on how many teeth you're replacing and your particular needs and preferences. Some varieties of dentures include:
Full or Traditional Dentures
Full or traditional dentures replace all of the teeth in one or both of your dental arches. They're made up of a gum-colored base used to hold a set of artificial teeth in place, which is typically made from porcelain, composite resin, or another tooth-colored material. Full or traditional dentures are removable and attach over your gums with a suction mechanism or adhesive.
Partial dentures replace some teeth when you still have healthy natural teeth. There are a few ways partial dentures attach to your mouth, including clips secured to your neighboring teeth, or with a gum-colored base with openings where you still have natural teeth. Once in place, partial dentures enable your natural teeth and your artificial teeth to work side-by-side.
If you're planning on extracting teeth to make room for a full set of dentures, immediate dentures can prevent you from having to go without teeth until your extractions heal. Your dentist makes your immediate dentures from an impression of your mouth before your extractions, so they’re ready to wear as soon as your remaining teeth are removed.
Implant-supported dentures attach to dental implants, which are tiny titanium posts your dentist or oral surgeon embeds in your jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. Implant-supported dentures are more secure and comfortable than traditional dentures and can prevent bone tissue in your jaw from deteriorating.
